Finances 5: Happy New Year (Again)!

This won’t be a full financials post, mostly because I did a massive breakdown of 2023 just recently. But it turns out January is worth remarking on, even though the Smashwords numbers aren’t in yet (and won’t be for a while—reporting and payment from their wide distribution partners, e.g. Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, etc. takes forever).

Why is January interesting? Last month, not one but two of our books crossed into the black!

That’s right: The Little Cozy Book and Bard City Blues have joined the first two issues of Wyngraf in the august club of releases that earned out their budgets. The Little Cozy Book, our flash fiction anthology, has now made a tidy profit of $5.50, while my own novel Bard City Blues stands at a healthy $19.39.

A note on Bard City: while the production funds were raised by a smashing Kickstarter, the book’s budget ran over by $250. (Don’t worry, we spent it on art.) So it took $269.39 of post-Kickstarter sales to reach that number!

One last random thought. I noticed while gathering numbers that of the various distribution partners on Smashwords, the bulk of our readers, by far, use Kobo. Shout out to you Kobo people!
